The advent of wireless technology means that we currently have the means to be able to work absolutely anywhere we choose. Whilst remote working brings a huge amount of advantages, such as you can instantly communicate with the office, your colleagues and your customers or clients, it can also bring its own issues.

Sometimes, until you become conscious of something, you may not be fully aware of its impact on you.

  • The constant accessibility to your telephone and e-mails means that it increases the expectation for you to be in contact and responding to calls and e-mails at all times outside of office hours becomes the norm.
  • The carrying home of your smart phone, iPad or laptop blurs the boundary between the office and home. If you are able to carry your office with you, then you never leave it behind.
  • The accessibility to all the necessary information in order to do your job also means that working from home has become a popular part of the working week. But this also blurs the boundaries further between work and home and disrupts the boundaries for the end of the working day.

Smartphones and their amazing convenience and ease to carry also means that it has become the norm to carry it with you and check it over dinner, at the movies and taking it on holiday seems to have become almost bizarre not to.

Disconnecting is the most powerful strategy on the list for managing your stress. Try this week to take a break from your gadgets that keep you connected with work, when you should be resting from it. Switch it off, have a good rest.
