Hydration and stress

The link between water and stress reduction is well documented. All of our organs, including our brains, need water to function properly. If you’re dehydrated, your body isn’t running well — and that can further exacerbate the feelings of stress. Stress can cause dehydration, and dehydration can cause stress. It’s a vicious cycle!

Leaving work at work

Almost every single person I have ever provided therapy to manage their work induced stress have worked many more hours than their contracted ones and have spent many of hours of their leisure time completing work tasks. If this is the norm for you, I would advise you begin a gradual lessening of this habit – cold turkey is often too ambitious and not realistic in the long-term.

An example first step for this week ahead would be that you calculate how many hours you spend in your leisure time working, if this is three hours 4 evenings per week then lets go for two hours on these 4 evenings. This is up to you to decide what achievable, set the number and stick to it.  Dr Debbie Smith

Identifying Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

There are many different events that can cause PTSD, these include:
Serious road accidents, violent personal assaults, such as sexual assault, mugging or robbery, prolonged sexual abuse, violence or severe neglect, witnessing violent deaths, armed forces, being held hostage, terrorist attacks, natural disasters such as severe floods, earthquakes or tsunamis

PTSD can develop immediately after someone experiences a disturbing event or it can occur weeks, months or even years later. PTSD is estimated to affect about 1 in every 3 people who have a traumatic experience, but it’s not clear exactly why some people develop the condition and others don’t.

One of the most effective interventions for PTSD is Psychological intervention such as – cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). 4 typical symptoms of PTSD – Flashbacks, nightmares, easily startled and easily angered.

Clients Stories, can you identify with any of them?

  • I had been feeling extremely isolated from people, even my friends and family because I couldn’t explain to anyone what it was I was feeling. I felt uncomfortable and nervous in so many social situations: Bumping into the neighbour, dinner parties, informal chat with colleagues – I had no idea what was wrong with me.

    Can we help?

  • My life was so restricted, I couldn’t rest, always having to double check everything; the front door, the windows, the cooker, even going upstairs to check on the children several times per evening. It got to the stage where I was getting out of bed to check the front door was locked when I’d only checked in ten minutes before

    Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
    Can we help?

  • It didn’t happen suddenly, it just crept up on me slowly. I barely noticed, until my wife started pointing out that I was snappy at the kids and was waking earlier and earlier with a feeling of doom about the day.
